Showcasing Black Raven at PAX 2025

For many game developers, attending PAX represents a significant milestone and an invaluable opportunity to connect with players. Recently, I had the incredible experience of showcasing my game, Black Raven, at PAX 2025. Being part of the PAX Rising exhibit proved to be an unforgettable journey, offering substantial exposure for our indie title. The chance to present directly to potential fans and industry professionals makes a gathering like PAX exceptionally valuable.

Understanding the Costs and Opportunities Associated with PAX

Navigating Exhibition Expenses

The financial aspect of exhibiting at PAX is often a significant hurdle, particularly for smaller studios. Fortunately, my university generously provided a completely free exhibition space, hosting the event to promote alumni games. Consequently, this eliminated a major expense. Typically, a half premium indie pod can cost around $3,500 AUD (approximately $2,200 USD). Therefore, securing sponsorship or institutional backing is often crucial for making PAX accessible.

Leveraging Partnerships

Furthermore, exploring partnerships with universities, organizations, or other institutions can drastically reduce costs and enhance your presence at events like PAX. For example, the university connection proved invaluable in securing the free exhibition space for Black Raven. Additionally, these relationships can open doors to networking opportunities and potential collaborations.

The Impact of PAX: Wishlist Gains and YouTuber Exposure

The impact of showcasing at PAX was immediately apparent. Prior to the event, Black Raven had approximately 9,000 wishlists on Steam. By the end of the physical event, that number climbed significantly to nearly 11,000 – representing a substantial boost in visibility and interest. Notably, the momentum continues to build, although at a slightly reduced pace now.

Beyond the impressive wishlist numbers, we also gained exposure through YouTube content creators. Several mid-range YouTubers (channels with between 50,000 and 100,000 subscribers) recognized Black Raven‘s potential and created videos showcasing gameplay footage. This organic promotion proved incredibly valuable for reaching a wider audience and generating excitement around the game. As a result, we saw increased traffic to our Steam page.

Key Lessons Learned for Future PAX Exhibitions

Space Optimization & Physical Marketing

While the experience was overwhelmingly positive, there are crucial considerations for developers contemplating exhibiting at PAX or similar events. Firstly, space matters considerably. My allocated space was smaller than a standard premium pod and lacked a prominent banner. While this didn’t severely hinder interaction with attendees, it’s something to carefully consider when budgeting and planning your setup.

Secondly, don’t underestimate the power of physical marketing materials. Flyers, business cards, stickers – these tangible reminders create a lasting impression on potential fans. We distributed a significant amount of swag at PAX, and noticed a noticeable increase in demo players on the third day as word spread through attendees. Therefore, investing in well-designed and appealing promotional items can yield substantial returns.

Networking & Building Relationships

Leveraging your network is also essential for success. The university connection was instrumental in securing the free exhibition space; similarly, building relationships with institutions or organizations can unlock invaluable opportunities. Furthermore, engaging with other developers at PAX provides a chance to learn from their experiences and build valuable connections within the industry.

Final Thoughts: Was Showcasing at PAX Worth It?

Absolutely! The exposure gained at PAX, particularly the significant increase in wishlists and the attention from content creators, made showcasing Black Raven a worthwhile investment. However, careful planning, realistic budgeting, and strategic execution are essential to maximize your return on effort when attending events like PAX. Don’t be afraid to go the extra mile – those small details can make all the difference in creating a memorable experience for attendees and generating lasting excitement around your game. The value of experiencing direct player feedback and connecting with potential fans is truly priceless; participating in PAX was an exceptional opportunity to achieve just that.

TL;DR: PAX provided invaluable exposure for Black Raven! It’s worth the investment if you’re prepared to put in the effort and engage actively with attendees, especially when considering events like PAX.
