The Necromancer’s Tale represents a monumental undertaking in interactive storytelling, culminating in an impressive 400,000 words—a scale rivaling that of classic works like Lord of the Rings. Developing such a sprawling narrative game presented unique challenges, but ultimately proved successful thanks to a deliberate and well-structured approach.

Laying the Groundwork for an Epic Narrative Game

The project’s scope became strikingly clear early on when it secured EU Creative Europe MEDIA funding. Fortunately, experienced game narrative director Dave joined the team, providing invaluable guidance. His 15 months of collaboration were instrumental in establishing a robust foundation—a detailed pre-game timeline that encompassed extensive history, geography, character biographies, and a substantial prologue with initial chapters. This comprehensive groundwork proved crucial for maintaining consistency throughout the development process.

Defining Scope & Establishing Tone

Initially, the team focused on defining the precise scope of the narrative game, outlining key plot points, major characters, and the overall tone. For example, meticulous documentation ensured that every facet of the world felt believable and internally consistent. Subsequently, Dave’s emphasis on a flexible development cycle—allowing for iteration and refinement—proved vital. As he noted, truly impactful storytelling requires time to mature and evolve naturally.

Building & Managing a Collaborative Writing Team

Following Dave’s departure in 2020 due to personal commitments, the team expanded with writers Damir and Zach, later joined by Sarah, Michael, and Brad. The previously established direction served as a critical guidepost, ensuring consistent quality across contributors—a lesson equally applicable when commissioning artists or other creative professionals. Furthermore, integrating branching narratives and interactive elements with such extensive text introduced complexities that demanded constant synchronization between the narrative tool (Articy:Draft) and the game’s code.

Streamlining Communication & Task Management

Initially, separating narrative development from coding created logistical hurdles. However, unifying ownership of both Articy and Unity projects significantly streamlined integration. Writers submitted their work via Google Docs, enabling a rigorous proofreading and editing phase overseen by the director. This facilitated consistency checks, error identification, and opportunities to enrich the overall narrative game experience. A pool of writing tasks (scenarios and quests) was then created, allowing writers to choose projects aligned with their preferences and availability. Bi-weekly meetings fostered collaboration and ensured everyone remained focused on overarching story goals.

Ensuring Coherence in a Multi-Author Narrative

Maintaining narrative coherence across multiple writers presented a significant challenge. To address concerns about inconsistent characterization, the team implemented a meticulously planned approach: documenting each chapter’s internal state of the player character (PC). This provided writers with clear direction and context, ensuring a cohesive narrative arc that charted a believable transformation from a grieving young adult to a morally compromised individual grappling with dark magic and existential questioning. The detailed game design document outlined the plot chapter by chapter, allowing for iterative review and refinement.

Tracking Character Arcs & Plot Progression

Notably, the iterative process of reviewing and refining the story multiple times proved invaluable in identifying potential inconsistencies or plot holes early on—avoiding costly revisions later. Therefore, a structured system that tracked character arcs and plot progression was essential to ensure each writer contributed meaningfully to the overall narrative game experience. The team’s collaborative efforts resulted in The Necromancer’s Tale receiving widespread praise for its compelling narrative and immersive world, earning it a nomination for a prestigious TIGA award—a testament to their dedication and teamwork.
