Halloween is rapidly approaching, and the maker community is brimming with creative project ideas! Appalachian Forge Works has taken a particularly ingenious approach by repurposing an old PC case into a unique Halloween vending machine – a truly impressive blend of innovation and resourcefulness. This project beautifully illustrates how readily available materials can be transformed into something genuinely special.

The Allure of Repurposed PC Case Components

One of the most appealing aspects of this build lies in its foundation: a discarded PC case. These are frequently found for free or at incredibly low prices, providing a robust metal enclosure with pre-existing mounting points—ideally suited for housing complex electronics. Furthermore, Appalachian Forge Works skillfully leveraged existing resources instead of purchasing new materials, showcasing efficient crafting.

Why Choose a PC Case as Your Base?

Beyond the cost savings, utilizing a PC case offers inherent advantages. For example, their sturdy construction protects delicate electronics from damage. Similarly, the pre-drilled holes and mounting points simplify integration with other components, significantly reducing build time. As a result of these benefits, repurposing is becoming increasingly popular for maker projects.

Delving into the Spooky Machine’s Mechanics

The original internal components of the PC case were replaced with an Asus Chromebox CN60 running Linux, which provided ample space for other essential parts. A compact size was key to ensuring everything fit comfortably within the repurposed enclosure. In addition to the Chromebox, the machine incorporates an Arduino UNO Rev3 board, a monitor for displaying animated Halloween graphics, appropriate power supplies, and amplified speakers designed to enhance the overall atmosphere.

How the Vending Process Functions

  1. Arduino-Powered Control: An Arduino UNO Rev3 diligently manages the entire vending sequence.
  2. Prize Delivery System: A 12V motor rotates a wheel, dispensing prizes (rubber balls in this demonstration) from a hopper positioned atop the PC case.
  3. Precise Detection with Break Beam Sensors: A photoresistor and LED function as a break beam sensor to accurately detect when a prize has passed, signaling the Arduino to halt the motor’s rotation. This ensures each item is dispensed correctly.
  4. Smart Hopper Emptying Prevention: The system incorporates a timeout period; should no prize be detected, it logically assumes the hopper is empty and ceases attempting to dispense further items.

Creating a Family-Friendly Halloween Experience

While not intended to be overtly frightening, this Halloween vending machine delivers a fun and engaging experience—particularly appealing for younger trick-or-treaters. It stands as a testament to the inventive potential realized when combining readily available hardware with clever programming skills. Therefore, it is an excellent example of how even an old PC case can have a new life!
