That is so cool! But what do you do with it? Those are the two main things that just about everyone says upon seeing my Unitree Go2 Pro robot for the first time. The latter is a hard question to answer, as the bot is kind of a tool and kind of a toy. While the robot’s playful movements are captivating – especially when watching it clumsily attempt to ‘fetch’ an object – it currently lacks a defined purpose beyond basic locomotion. The ‘follow me’ mode works well, but it’s primarily entertaining for onlookers rather than offering practical utility. It’s clear that Unitree has created a fantastic platform with immense potential, but it needs further development to unlock its full capabilities.

The robot’s sensors are functional, allowing it to detect obstacles and adjust its movements accordingly. However, the software feels somewhat rudimentary, lacking advanced features like autonomous navigation or object recognition. The limited battery life (around 60-90 minutes depending on usage) is another drawback. Despite these limitations, the Unitree Go2 Pro represents a significant leap forward in quadruped robot technology.

The Unitree Go2 Pro represents a significant step forward in quadruped robot technology. Its smooth movement, robust design, and relatively affordable price point make it an attractive option for hobbyists, researchers, and developers alike. However, its current lack of defined applications highlights the need for further development and integration with advanced software platforms. Imagine this robot deployed in search and rescue operations, used for environmental monitoring, or even as a personal assistant – these are just some of the exciting possibilities that could be realized with continued innovation.
