Discover the Future of Display Technology with Laser Displays

Nature, Published online: 20 August 2025; doi:10.1038/s41586-025-09107-7 Photonic integrated circuits are enabling compact, efficient laser displays with improved color performance. Recent findings published in *Nature* detail a significant advancement, moving beyond traditional bulky laser projectors towards truly flat-panel solutions. The evolution of laser displays is being significantly propelled by this innovation; furthermore, research promises even more impactful changes.

The Problem with Traditional Laser Displays

Traditional laser displays utilize multiple lasers arranged around a projector lens to create images. This arrangement inherently results in a large footprint and considerable heat generation. Furthermore, the complex optics required for beam shaping and color mixing contribute to inefficiencies and limit colour performance. The sheer volume of components also increases manufacturing costs. For years, engineers have sought ways to miniaturize laser displays without sacrificing brightness or colour accuracy – a challenge that has now been partially addressed by leveraging PIC technology. This reliance on multiple lasers is a key limitation that photonic integrated circuits directly address.

Photonic Integrated Circuits: A Key Enabler

Photonic integrated circuits are miniature optical devices fabricated on a chip using techniques similar to those used in microelectronics. These circuits manipulate light, guiding it through channels and enabling complex optical functions like beam shaping, colour mixing, and even wavelength conversion – all within a compact space. The research team focused on developing PICs specifically designed for laser display applications. By integrating these PICs directly into the laser system, they’ve effectively eliminated many of the bulky external optics previously required. This dramatically reduces the size of the display system, allowing for truly flat-panel designs. These PICs offer a significant advantage over previous approaches to laser display technology, particularly when considering space constraints. Moreover, the improved colour performance attributed to integrated circuits is a major step forward.
