With deep sadness, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) acknowledges the passing of Dr. Mannava V.K. Sivakumar, a distinguished figure in climate science and agriculture. His death, which occurred on March 30, 2025, marks a significant loss for the global community dedicated to understanding and mitigating climate change. Throughout his career, Dr. Sivakumar made invaluable contributions to agricultural meteorology and climate prediction, leaving behind a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire future generations.

A Pioneering Career in Climate Science

Dr. Mannava V.K. Sivakumar, affectionately known as Shiv, held the prestigious role of Acting Secretary for the IPCC from January to June 2016, a pivotal period during the early stages of the sixth assessment cycle. During this time, he skillfully oversaw the organization of the 43rd Session of the IPCC, where crucial decisions were made regarding special reports to be undertaken in the subsequent cycle. Furthermore, his leadership ensured the smooth functioning of a vital international body.

Early Contributions and Expertise

Beyond this critical administrative role, Dr. Sivakumar‘s expertise significantly shaped policies and initiatives aimed at enhancing food security within vulnerable regions. He brought a wealth of knowledge to bear on the complex challenges posed by climate change and its impact on agricultural practices. For example, his insights informed strategies for drought resilience and improved crop yields in areas particularly susceptible to climate-related disruptions.

Recognition and Impact

Dr. Sivakumar’s commitment extended far beyond the IPCC; he was a respected leader within the broader climate science community. Notably, his contributions were recognized through prestigious awards like the 2007 International Service in Agronomy Award from the American Society of Agronomy—a testament to his outstanding work both nationally and internationally.

Significant Roles at Key Organizations

Prior to his involvement with the IPCC, Dr. Sivakumar held several influential positions within international organizations. He served as Director of the Climate Prediction and Adaptation branch of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) from 2010 to 2012 before retiring. In addition, he headed WMO’s Agricultural Meteorological Division from 1998 to 2010. These roles allowed him to directly influence global strategies for climate resilience.

A Foundation of Academic Excellence

Dr. Sivakumar‘s journey began on August 30, 1950, in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. He built a strong academic foundation through his education at Agriculture College, Bapatla (graduating in 1970), followed by a Master’s degree from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi (1972), and culminating in a Ph.D. from Iowa State University (1977). This rigorous training equipped him with the knowledge and skills to excel in his subsequent career endeavors.
