The project, detailed in a new article on New Atlas, centers around the springtail – a small insect known for its impressive ability to jump. These creatures utilize a unique bone structure called a ‘furcula’ (often referred to as a “wishbone”) to store and release energy during their jumps, allowing them to propel themselves upwards with remarkable efficiency. The research team, led by Professor James Gimzewski at UCLA, sought to replicate this ingenious design in a robotic system.

The resulting robot, dubbed the HAMR (Harvard Autonomous Mobile Robot), is surprisingly compact – roughly 12 centimeters long. However, its most striking feature is an artificial furcula constructed from carbon fiber. This ‘tail’ isn’t just for show; it’s meticulously engineered to store and release energy during each jump. The robot utilizes a series of pneumatic actuators to control the movement of this tail, mimicking the springtail’s natural jumping motion. The HAMR achieves jumps that are an astounding 23 times its own body length – far exceeding the capabilities of most conventional robots. This remarkable performance is achieved through a clever combination of factors: the energy storage and release provided by the carbon fiber furcula, coupled with precise control over the robot’s movements. Researchers used a series of sensors to detect ground contact, triggering the activation of the pneumatic system and initiating the jump.
